Dating back to the 1850s, the pub’s origins reflected the wealth of the area, wealth that was based on the trade in jute from India.

At its height, in the late nineteenth century, Dundee boasted around 60 jute mills and more than 50,000 workers were employed by Dundee’s jute industry. The mechanical process to spin raw jute fibre was first developed in Dundee and the jute barons grew rich processing and selling manufactured jute products. The Cambustay prospered thanks to the affluent lifestyle of these jute barons, a lifestyle made possible by the opening of the Dundee and Arbroath railway line in 1838.

‘you can often see some of Scotland’s impressive oil rigs being towed up to Dundee’

The Cambustay’s gardens overlook the Firth of Tay and you can often see some of Scotland’s impressive oil rigs being towed up to Dundee for repair. The Cambustay is situated 4 miles from Dundee City Centre in the seaside town of Broughty Ferry, with its blue flag beach, castle and esplanade. The Cambustay’s stunning gardens and its proximity to the beach make it an essential stop for walkers and there is a path to the beach from the inn – very handy! The pub is also within easy reach of many of Scotland prestigious golf courses with the world famous Carnoustie Links Course just 10 minutes away.
